Vehicle Warning Lights
VEHICLE WARNING LIGHTS - WHAT DO THEY MEAN?
Let's face it, those tiny pictures that light up on your dashboard don't always have the clearest meanings, and if one comes on when you're driving, you can't exactly pull over to check the manual. Plenty of the symbols are just indicator lights rather than warning lights, like the sideways spaceship that appears when your fog lights are on, but there are a few you should be concerned about if they pop up.
Keep these in mind and you'll be sure to recognize problems with your car as soon as they start!
Definitely keep an eye out for your check engine light, which kind of looks like an engine but at a glance is more like a shakily drawn hexagon. The check engine light can mean a lot of different things, so your best bet is to go to head to the service department and ask them to use a diagnostic scanner.
You also need to know the pressure and temperature warning lights. A comb sailing the high seas means your coolant temperature is up and you need to pull over and make sure you have enough coolant. Also make sure the cap is on tight and there aren't any leaks. The same comb inside a sun means your transmission fluid is too hot, same deal, check the levels.
An oil light can indicate low oil pressure.
Your battery may be having trouble charging if a battery warning light comes on, which is just a rectangle with plus and minus signs inside. This could be a problem with the battery itself or the alternator belt.
A horseshoe with an exclamation mark inside tells you one or more of your tires are low, and an exclamation mark in a circle inside parentheses indicates a problem with your brakes (hint: make sure the parking brake is off!).
