History of Chevrolet

Chevrolet has designed a lot of vehicles since its inception in 1911. Throughout that time, much in the way of technology has changed. Yet in over a hundred years, some things have stayed the same. Chevrolet’s commitment to making reliable automobiles with a performance-edge at a great value has been constant.

The brand began in Detroit when Louis Chevrolet partnered with William Durant, head of General Motors. Louis had a strong racing background and brought that passion for performance to the brand.

From the get-go, Chevrolet became known as quite the trendsetter. In 1913, the automaker debuted the Royal Mail Roadster. This early Chevy model had features that you could only find on luxury cars at the time.

The Chevrolet Suburban debuted in 1936. Looking at it, you could see how it was a precursor to what we know today as the SUV. Even early on the Suburban was known for its cargo space and ability to safely cart families to their adventure destinations.

In 1953, the world was introduced to the Chevrolet Corvette and the American automotive landscape was never the same. The Corvette soon featured a very special engine. The Chevy small-block V8, arguably the most robust high-performance engine ever made, would be dropped in literally millions of vehicles over the years.

The Chevrolet Camaro hit the streets in 1967 and it was everything a pony car should be: affordable, powerful and attractive.

Chevrolet also developed a reputation for making high-quality pickup trucks. By 1971, the Chevrolet C/10 Cheyenne helped make Chevy trucks America’s favorite.

Today, Chevrolet is still carrying the torch that Louis Chevrolet and William Durant lit back in the early 1900s. The Corvette and the Camaro models are still going strong. Soon, Chevrolet will have two electric vehicles in the fight, the Volt and the Bolt. The Silverado truck is still as durable and reliable as ever at a great value, like the rest of Chevy’s lineup.
